Medical acupuncture

Acupuncture Nottingham

Medical acupuncture (often referred to as 'dry needling') is a modern adaptation of the ancient Chinese practice of acupuncture. It is defined as a therapeutic technique that involves the insertion of fine needles into certain points across the body to encourage healing and pain relief.

It is different from traditional Chinese methods in that practitioners work specifically with musculoskeletal issues rather than using the energy flow (qi) and ancient beliefs of yin and yang.

Medical acupuncture works directly with the body’s nervous system in a couple of different ways:

  • To produce endorphins- the body’s natural painkillers

  • To re-set neural firing signals. When a muscle is in spasm or 'tight', it can be due to a signal from the nervous system, acupuncture helps to break this circuit- a bit like a defibrillator

What does it feel like?

Medical acupuncture is not painful and clients often say that they don't feel the needles breaking the skin at all. Once the needles are placed into the relevant parts of the muscle, a dull ache or 'twitchy' feeling can sometimes be felt, a clear sign that the needles are influencing the nervous system. All bodies are different and some people have a much stronger response to the treatment than others- some muscles are super twitchy, others hardly respond at all.

Following treatment, the needle sites can feel achy. Clients sometimes feel a little tired. Lots of water and a good nights sleep help the body recover from treatment.

Prices vary from £45-£55 per hour depending on practitioner experience

Myofascial cupping

Cupping Nottingham

This technique focuses on the fascia – the spider web-like soft tissue component of the connective tissue system that covers the entire body, wrapping around muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones, organs, nerves and blood vessels.

When injured or overused through poor postural habits, repetitive strains etc, adhesions can form in this network of soft tissue, causing it to lose its flexibility and ‘bundle up’, becoming tight and restrictive.

Myofascial cupping helps to lift and separate the fascia, reducing adhesions and helping to boost hydration, leading to benefits such as:

·      Assisting the body in maintaining Range Of Motion in joints

·      Reduce inflammation

·      reducing the incidence of injury

·      and maintaining functional soft tissue

What does myofascial cupping involve?

Plastic cups and vacuum suction are used in myofascial cupping to lift the skin inside the cups. The cups do not cause pain, however, bruising may occur as the therapy helps to bring nutrient-rich blood to the target area.

Prices vary from £45-£55 per hour depending on practitioner experience

 Fire cupping

Fire Cupping Nottingham

Whilst the therapeutic benefits of fire cupping are identical to the more familiar suction cupping you may have received as part of a sports massage (increased blood flow, reduced muscle tension and inflammation, removal of lymph and promotion of cell repair), the treatment feels quite different.  Using larger cups and with the added effects of heat from the flame used to create the vacuum in the cup, this is a relaxing treatment, particularly suited to back and shoulder issues.

 Functional Movement Screening (FMS)

FMS is the process of observing a person whilst they perform basic human movements. Today's lifestyles have such an impact on the body that even the most basic movement patterns can be difficult.

This difficulty arises from a number of different factors. Genetics play a role in the way our muscles and bones develop as we grow but the biggest impact comes from compensation as we get older. But what is compensation and why is it so impactful?

The body adapts to forces placed upon it- occupational hazards, postural fatigue, stress and illness are all prime examples of common factors. Over time, these become engrained and affect the way we move. As a result of this, the way we move becomes dysfunctional- Muscles get tight, other muscles get loose or 'underactive' and this results in pain.

In order to address this pain and 'fix' the problem, we absolutely have to look at the bigger picture. Treatment of the pain (be it with pain killers, foam rolling or even massage) is an effective way of getting rid of the symptom, but not the cause.

When a person continues to present with a recurring issue, FMS allows us to put together a holistic package of treatment which will include:

  1. Specific assessment of the individual relevant to their lifestyle

  2. Specific Massage treatment

  3. Specific activation exercises to 'switch on' the muscles that aren't working as they should

  4. Specific SMR (self myofascial release- think foam rolling or lacrosse ball work) techniques to help lengthen muscle fibres that have become overworked and tight

  5. Specific stretches to help lengthen tissues where needed

This comprehensive assessment and treatment is available with Kelly and it can benefit absolutely anyone!
